Electricité de France - Tarifs |
In the French system you chose how much electricity you want to use.
The higher the size of the input, the higher the standing charge. To
optimise your costs, it is therefore important that you don’t request too
higher supply.
Standard Service (Option Base)
A standard house with standard usage would be a 6 or 9 KW
supply, but if you find that your power ‘trips’ frequently you may find that
you will need to increase this to 12KW (or higher if you rely on lots of
electrical heating). Actually how much you need will depend on your
house and your appliances – EDF offer a service to estimate for you but trial
and error is a good guide.

Economy Service (Option 'Heures Creuse' or HC)
In addition to the standard service, EDF offer an off peak rate of power,
called ‘Heures Creuse’. However, the standing charge is higher so this
is only worth opting for if you use sufficient electricity overnight.
A standard sized water heater is not sufficient to justify the higher standing
charge – you really need to have electric heaters on at night to make it
worth the change. In the Vendee cheap rate runs from 23h30 to 7h30.

Tempo
There is a third (very complex) option which can lower your costs, especially if you don’t
intend to use your house during the winter. Option Tempo delivers significantly
lower electricity prices for most of the year (blue days), but EDF have the option to
ramp up the costs to 10 times the normal price on 22 days (red days) during the year
(usually the coldest days, thereby reducing the consumption by Tempo users).
On a further 43 days the price is about the same as a standard tariff,
but slightly higher overnight. Sundays is always a blue day; Sundays and
holidays are never red; there can never be more than 5 red days in a row.
Tempo can be a cost effective option
– especially if you are a largish user, but an infrequent winter visitor.

(Note: a forerunner of Tempo was called EJP – this provided a similar system
but with much better tariffs, should you find you have this tariff in your
property keep it: once its been changed to a new tariff you can’t get it
back!)
